Situation
The client wished to relocate a specific company from one tenant to another while they were live on Business Central. You cannot move a single firm within an environment; rather, the environment is transferred from one tenant to another, which is one drawback of the environment transfers procedure.
Resolution
My solution dawned on me as I considered it: duplicate the Production environment to a Sandbox environment and finish the Environment Transfer for the newly created Sandbox environment. I would copy the Sandbox environment to a Production environment once the new environment is operational. After the Production environment is operational, I would proceed to log in and eliminate any entities that are superfluous for this new tenant.
It is crucial to consider installed Extensions as well. This client, for instance, was utilizing Continia’s Expense Management software. Upon contacting Continia’s support, I was able to obtain a checklist of necessary steps to be completed in both the source and destination production environments.
Additionally, this client used proprietary APIs for Power BI reports, all of which required updating in Power BI following the transfer.
Actions Made
- I chose the Production environment in the Dynamics 365 Business Central admin area of the source tenant and then made a copy.
- I started the environment transfer procedure as soon as the new Sandbox environment was in the Active State. Choose Environment Transfers from the Dynamics 365 Business Central admin center.
Choose the Environments for Transfer. Enter the destination Microsoft Entra tenant ID after selecting the environments to transfer. After finished, select Transfer.
You can view the transfer as pending as an outgoing transfer when you click Transfer. You can also cancel if necessary.
- Next, log in to the Dynamics 365 Business Central admin center at the destination. Select Receive Environments after opening the Environment Transfers. Click Next after entering the source Microsoft Entra tenant ID.
Verify the incoming transfers that are still pending and choose the appropriate environment to accept them on, if there are many options. When you are ready, click Confirm.
- Since I had it configured to transfer instantly, the source environment initiates the transfer process. After the transfer procedure is finished, the environment appears in the destination tenancy and is removed from the source tenant.
- I then chose to create a replica of the Sandbox environment to the Production environment. Proceed in the same manner as in step 1, but choose Production as the new environment type.
I entered the environment once the production environment was made active, went to firms, and eliminated any firms that were not required for this new tenant.
